Sleep position recommendations during pregnancy have to balance reflux management with broader pregnancy sleep guidance, which makes this a slightly different conversation than general reflux sleep advice.

The generally recommended position

Sleeping on the left side is recommended during pregnancy for reasons beyond reflux (it supports healthy blood flow to the uterus), and it happens to also be the generally preferred position for reflux specifically, since it keeps the stomach-esophagus junction more favorably positioned. This makes left-side sleeping a good match for both pregnancy guidance and reflux management simultaneously.

Adding elevation

Combining left-side sleeping with an elevated upper body (using a wedge designed for pregnancy or several firm pillows arranged to support the back and shoulders, not just the head) addresses both the positional and gravity components of nighttime reflux.

Pregnancy pillows as a practical tool

A full-body pregnancy pillow, which many women already use for general comfort and hip support, can often be positioned to also provide some upper body elevation, making it a dual-purpose tool worth considering if you don't already have one.

This isn't personal medical advice — always follow your prenatal care provider's specific guidance, since individual circumstances can affect what's recommended for you.
